Previous Story: 88. Settling Affairs - “Up to No Good” - Blood is Thicker
Alone in a quiet corner of the nightclub, Fei shivered. Even though her injured ankle was healing well (thanks to the newest Heal-O-Matic device pumping her full of medicinal nanites, courtesy of Lady Rose, plus acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine), she couldn’t forget what she had seen at Cynfo Tech.
It hadn’t been too difficult to access the server room and plant the wireless tap. But, as she was about to leave, she’d heard noises coming from a nearby lab. She couldn’t resist taking a look, and activated her adaptive suit. Approaching carefully, she peeked through a small window — and what she’d seen had shaken her to the core.
The chief of Cynfo Tech, Ryder Arcadia, was there with dozens of silent, dead-eyed CyMS, all working on some large, mechanical object. Fei later concluded that there was a surveillance system linked to the CyMS, because in moments, several ran toward the door.
Sprinting away, Fei only just reached the window she had entered through. With the CyMS on her tail, she had to throw herself through, and she landed badly on the ground outside.
The memories of those terrifying few moments constantly returned to her. What was the large mechanical object? Why was Arcadia constructing it? And why was the CEO of Cynfo using CyMS to help him?
Fei hadn’t yet told Lady Rose. She didn’t want to take the boss’s mind off the crucial upcoming operation. But she could at least discuss what she’d seen with H3x — perhaps the pair of them could figure it out.
Fei had already decided something else that day. If there was a chance of getting out of SL, she had to find her brother, Ohanzee, and convince him to join her.
I can’t leave him here. If something happens, I’ll never forgive myself.
